Question from Jessie

发表时间:2007年11月14日 20时15分
Hello there! Thank you very much for all of your lovely messages.

Jessie left a message and wanted to know how to understand a long sentence. I asked two of my colleagues Jo and Callum for some advice. Here are their answers:

            Jo and Callum

Whenever you listen to a long sentence, don't get overwhelmed by the new fancy vocabulary you may come across. A lot of the times words and phrases that we find hard to catch are normally adjectives 形容词 that we use to modify verbs 动词 and nouns 名词.

We will still be able to understand the meaning of the sentences even if we don't get every word. But there is one thing I find very important not to neglect, the prefixes and suffixes, they can change the meaning of a sentence completely so be aware of them!

Never be afraid of asking the person to repeat what has just been said! We are all English learners, if we don't get something, it is OK to ask.

Don't worry about losing face, that's the only way we can learn, we will sooner or later find ourselves asking less and less.

Finally, make sure you practice speaking English everyday, even just one sentence, read it out loud, make sure you're pronuncing every word correctly, not in the lazy way I mentioned last time. I am sure you'll all become great speakers of English!

Hope this helps you Jessie and send me a message if you have more questions.

Good luck!

Feifei
